Pick a flute for your corrugated boxes

The flute is the wave-shaped layer inside the board. Taller flutes cushion and stack better. Smaller flutes are thinner and give a smoother surface for printing. For background on the material, see this overview of corrugated fiberboard.

FluteThicknessBest for
F fluteAbout 0.8 mm (1/32 in)Small, light retail boxes that need a premium printed look
E fluteAbout 1.6 mm (1/16 in)Printed mailer boxes, subscription boxes, cosmetics and apparel
B fluteAbout 3.2 mm (1/8 in)Everyday parcel shipping, food and display packaging
C fluteAbout 4 mm (5/32 in)General shipping cartons with more cushioning
A fluteAbout 4.8 mm (3/16 in)Fragile items that need maximum cushioning

Need more strength? Flutes combine into double wall board (such as BC flute) for heavy or high-value shipments.

Strength you can specify

Flute type is only half the story. Corrugated strength is rated by the Edge Crush Test (ECT), which measures how much stacking pressure the board can take before it buckles.

Single wall board at 32 ECT covers most e-commerce and parcel shipping. 44 ECT or double wall board is the safer pick for heavier loads, pallet stacking or fragile goods.

For photo-quality graphics, the design is printed on a smooth liner and laminated to the board, so even a sturdy shipping box can carry full-color branding. Prefer a lighter retail carton? See our cardboard boxes.

From printed corrugated boxes for subscription brands to simple custom shipping boxes with a one-color mark, we quote corrugated boxes with logo printing from 100 units.

Corrugated boxes are the most recycled packaging in the US. The EPA reports a 96.5 percent recycling rate for corrugated boxes in 2018.

Corrugated boxes FAQs

What is the minimum order for custom corrugated boxes?

Our standard minimum is 100 boxes for most printed corrugated styles. Contact us for sample-only runs or large wholesale volumes.

Which flute is best for mailer boxes?

E flute is the most popular choice for printed mailer boxes. It is thin enough to fold neatly and print sharply, yet strong enough for courier delivery. Move up to B flute for heavier contents.

What does ECT mean?

ECT stands for Edge Crush Test. It rates how much pressure the board's edge can take before crushing, which predicts stacking strength. 32 ECT suits most parcel shipping and 44 ECT suits heavier loads.

Single wall or double wall?

Single wall handles most e-commerce and retail shipping. Double wall adds a second fluted layer for heavy, fragile or high-value products and for boxes that will be stacked on pallets.

Can corrugated boxes be printed in full color?

Yes. We print full color, spot colors and inside panels. For the most detailed artwork, the design is printed on a smooth liner that is laminated to the corrugated board.

Are corrugated boxes recyclable?

Yes. Corrugated board is made with recycled content and is widely recyclable. An aqueous coating keeps it that way better than a plastic lamination.

How long does production take?

Standard turnaround is 10 to 12 business days after proof approval. Express production is available on select projects for a rush fee.
